Case goods and upholstery resource Standard Furniture has named former bedding executive Charlie Eitel as CEO. The company also has promoted company president Tim Ussery to chief operating officer. Ussery also will continue to serve as president, reporting to Eitel.
The CEO position was last held by Todd Evans, who left the company August 1.
Eitel, who has led four public and two private companies, most recently was chairman and CEO of WS Packaging Group and before that operated a consulting practice with Jeff Armstrong known as Eitel & Armstrong. He also served as interim CEO of three companies during that period.
He was also vice chair of the Board of Simmons Bedding Company from October 2008 to December 2009 and before that was chairman and CEO of Simmons from January 2000 until he became vice chair.
He also has served as president and chief operating officer at Interface Inc. and was president and CEO of Collins & Aikman Floor Coverings. He was also a former chairman of the International Sleep Products Assn.
“It is with confidence and commitment I am happy to join Standard and their family legacy,” Eitel said. “Our Industry is facing challenges across many fronts, and I feel it is important we all help each other in a supportive and caring way. Standard has an amazing reputation of delivering low cost, high value products, and this strategy will continue. We have stumbled in the last year, but trust me, we will stand tall and return to the founders operating model that served our associates and our loyal customers for over 74 years.
“We are focused, motivated and will get this done,” he added, noting that the company’s distribution center in Bay Minette is staffed and open for business with inventory across all product categories. In addition, he said, a majority of the company’s suppliers in Vietnam are open and producing product.
William ‘Billy’ Hodgson, chairman of the company added, “We look forward to Charlie joining the Standard family, working alongside Tim, who has earned his new position as a 17-year seasoned leader within the company. Charlie is a great fit for our culture and legacy and to lead us in our steadfast commitment to provide our retail partners with market leading customer service, quality and design.”
Ussery said, “Charlie is the type of seasoned executive our team was looking for, as he compliments the existing Standard team while providing clear direction based on decades of experience in consumer businesses and understanding of the furniture retail marketplace. At this time, we believe Charlie’s skillset of growing and transforming businesses is as important as ever.”
